We asked Tia:

What inspired you to pursue a career in cybersecurity?

🅰️ “I was drawn to cybersecurity because it aligned with how I think—strategically and resourcefully. Early in my career, I researched industry trends and recognized that security felt like the right fit for me. It’s creative, impactful, and challenges the way we think about problems. Coding wasn’t my passion, but cybersecurity immediately resonated with my mindset and skill set.”

What do you see as the most critical skills for the next generation of cybersecurity professionals?
🅰️ “It’s less about certifications and more about cultivating critical communication skills, influence, and the courage to ask difficult questions. The future of our industry depends on individuals who are willing to challenge norms and embrace new ways of thinking. The lack of these traits is part of why we struggle to collectively move forward.”

What leadership qualities do you believe are essential in cybersecurity?
🅰️ “Leaders need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. True leadership is about vulnerability—being honest about where we fall short and focusing on continuous improvement. It’s not about presenting perfection to executive boards but about showing what we’re doing to address gaps and prepare for the future.”

How do you define your leadership style, and what principles guide you?
🅰️ “Every situation offers a lesson, whether it’s something to emulate or avoid. I embrace vulnerability and transparency, which are central to my leadership style. For me, leadership is about continuously questioning and refining myself to be the best I can be for those who rely on me. Authenticity and humility are non-negotiable—I never get too high on wins or too low on setbacks. They’re all part of the journey.”

What advice do you have for those mentoring others?

🅰️ “Being a mentor is a serious responsibility. A great mentor asks more questions than they answer, helping others discover their own motivations and goals. It’s about empowering the next generation to find their path, not imposing a one-size-fits-all approach. Authenticity and vulnerability are key to building trust and creating lasting impact.”

Thank you, Tia, for sharing your invaluable insights and inspiring perspective with us. Your focus on authenticity and adaptability is a testament to the leadership our industry needs.

Stay tuned for more leaders to watch as we continue to highlight the individuals shaping the future of cybersecurity!
